Custom Built-In Entertainment Center with Fireplace in Warwick, NY

Homeowners often want a living room focal point that feels custom, warm, and functional. For this project in Warwick, NY, we built a custom entertainment center with a flush electric fireplace, built-in shelving, and a shiplap feature wall designed to look like it was always part of the home. At Odd Job Adam, we specialize in projects like this—combining carpentry, finish work, and problem solving to create custom built-ins for local homes. If you’re searching for a carpenter near me, carpenter in Warwick NY, or a handyman in Warwick NY, this project highlights the kind of detailed work we do for homeowners in the Warwick area.

Project Overview

The goal of this project was to create a built-in entertainment center that would anchor the living room while providing storage, warmth, and a clean architectural look.

Key features included:

  • Built-in flanking bookcases using IKEA Billy bookcases
  • Extended height bookcases with top extenders
  • A framed center feature wall
  • Shiplap wall cladding for texture and character
  • A flush electric fireplace insert
  • Framing for a wall-mounted TV above the fireplace
  • A custom mantle and step platform below the fireplace
  • Trim work to seamlessly tie everything into the adjacent wall and ceiling

The finished result feels like a fully custom built-in while still using smart material choices to keep the project efficient and budget-friendly.

Built-In Bookcases Using Billy Bookcases

To create the storage portion of the entertainment center, we used two Billy bookcases with height extenders positioned on each side of the feature wall.

While these units are commonly used as freestanding shelves, we modified them to create a true built-in appearance.

Key carpentry steps included:

  • Precisely leveling and securing the bookcases to the wall
  • Using filler panels to close gaps between the shelves and wall framing
  • Adding trim and scribing pieces to eliminate visible seams
  • Integrating the bookcases into the central wall structure

The goal was to make the bookcases feel structurally integrated into the room, rather than looking like furniture placed against a wall.

Here you can see how the project looked before the trim and doors were added to the Billy Bookcases on the tops and sides.

Framing the Fireplace Feature Wall

Between the two bookcases, we framed out a new interior wall section that would house both the electric fireplace insert and the mounted TV.

The wall framing was designed to:

  • Provide structural backing for the TV mount
  • Create a flush recess for the fireplace insert
  • Allow proper spacing and ventilation
  • Align perfectly with the depth of the adjacent bookcases

Once framed, the entire center wall was clad in horizontal shiplap, creating a clean and timeless backdrop for the fireplace and TV.

The homeowner wanted a low bench feature below the fireplace to give the unit some depth. Here you can see the framing setup for the bench and mantle mounting bracket.  The Seat was made from Spruce 2x8s, and the mantle mount from Fir 2x4s.

Custom Mantle and Hearth Step

To complete the focal point of the installation, we built a custom wood mantle above the electric fireplace.

A key challenge here was ensuring proper clearance between the fireplace and mantle, which is critical for both safety and manufacturer specifications. Electric fireplaces still produce heat, so spacing must be carefully measured during framing and finishing.

Below the fireplace, we added a custom step platform, which serves as a visual hearth and adds depth and dimension to the design.

This element also:

  • Anchors the fireplace visually
  • Protects the wall area beneath the unit
  • Adds architectural balance to the overall composition

The homeowner preferred the natural look and tone of pine, so we used 1x clear pine for the bench, and standard pine for the mantle.  We custom built the mantle onsite and finished both with a natural stain/poly finish to add protection.

Creating a Seamless Built-In Look

One of the most important parts of this project was making the entire installation look like a permanent part of the home’s architecture.

To achieve that built-in appearance, we added:

  • Custom trim pieces between the bookcases and center wall
  • Crown trim and filler panels at the top
  • Trim connections to the adjacent wall
  • Ceiling trim to eliminate visible gaps

These finishing touches transform a combination of components into a single cohesive built-in unit.

The result is a clean, custom entertainment center that feels fully integrated into the room.

Challenges We Solved During This Build

Every custom carpentry project has its own set of challenges. For this installation, the biggest factors were:

1. Fireplace Clearance
Electric fireplaces require specific clearance between the top of the unit and the mantle. The framing had to be carefully planned so the mantle height remained comfortable for viewing the TV while still meeting clearance requirements.

2. Seamless Bookcase Integration
Billy bookcases are designed as standalone furniture, so creating a built-in look requires custom trim, filler panels, and precise alignment.

3. Matching Depth and Alignment
The central feature wall had to line up perfectly with the depth of the bookcases so that everything read as one unit. We also created this layout so the unit was in line with the central wall of the home and hallway, so when looking down the hallway, this unit ended at a pleasing location to the homeowners.

Through careful planning and finish carpentry, we were able to achieve a clean, symmetrical, built-in appearance.
